I hear that Disney, the parent company of ABC, is back in talks with Hulu. I’d love to see ABC shows on Hulu, especially since the ABC media player sucks but Hulu works great.
I built lots of things out of Legos when I was a kid, but never a full-size rowboat. Nor did I paddle said rowboat down a river a couple of kilometers. But these guys did! Only in Japan.
I’m watching the UConn vs. Purdue game right now. I notice that both UConn and Purdue have different uniforms than I’m used to seeing. They’re tighter fitting, with smaller arm and neck holes, and in the case of Purdue, UnderArmor-style undershirts. In general I think they are better uniforms than the ultra-baggy look, and I’ve seen a lot more of these styles this year...
The end of the R-rated comic book superhero movie? I wouldn’t mind — Watchmen and The Punisher didn’t interest me in the slightest.

Every time I hear the phrase “toxic assets” in a financial news story, I can’t help thinking it sounds like the name of a punk rock band.
I just updated my new linux system and I was actually surprised when no restart was requried. Man, I’ve been using Windows exclusively for too long.
Another presidential milestone: Hugo Chavez calls President Obama an “ignoramus.” You aren’t truly an American President until Chavez insults you.
Update: Maybe ol’ Hugo was referring to the Obama Administration’s DoJ intervention on the side of the RIAA in a filesharing lawsuit, arguing that awarding damages 425,000 times the actual damages would be appropriate....
Is Spain the new France? Spanish troops to pull out of Kosovo before rest of NATO.
Bijî Newroz! Today is Nowruz, the Persian New Year.
Today is Match Day for medical students.
Paralyzed man able to walk again after bitten by a spider. This guy was watching the recovery of Christopher Reeve, hoping that a cure for Superman could mean a cure for him. His hopes were not in vain, although he was looking to the wrong superhero.
President Obama released his Men’s NCAA Final Four picks today. Rest assured that none of the schools he picked have any tax problems.
SciFi Channel will change its name to Syfy. Yes, you read that right. No, it doesn’t make any sense. I would say that this is jumping the shark, but I think that happened long ago, sometime before they started running original movies with titles like “Dinocroc.”
Stop the presses: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer follows the Christian Science Monitor out of the print business and into the online-only world. It makes some sense, since Seattle is a very plugged-in city, and the PI has always had a strong online presence. I’ve never lived there and I still read it frequently because they keep a lot of their archives available online.
Apple sucks. That pretty new iPod Shuffle has built-in DRM — hidden in the earphones. That’s sneaky.
How did I mis this? Barbie turned 50 last week. I gotta admit, she looks good for her age. Keep it up, Doll. Don’t let those Bratz skanks get you down.
Also, ever wondered what a real woman would look like with Barbie’s proportions? It’s frightening!
From NY Times video: Sex, Lies, and Photoshop.
Cake futures trading: This is a hilarious story about a real-life 3rd Grade lunch room Ponzi scheme. Read or listen here — it’s great.
Follow France’s lead: No, seriously! The French National Police are switching to Ubuntu Linux, with less trouble than switching to Vista and 70% less cost. Not too shabby.
Not photogenic:Celebrities Love AIDS and Breasts…Hate The Prostate. And diabetes, and malaria, ….

I usually really enjoy NPR’s news coverage, but ever since the last election cycle I think the quality is slipping. Last week’s interview with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is unfortunately indicative of this slide. In this exclusive interview, NPR correspondant Michele Kelemen spoke with Secretary Clinton about rebuilding Gaza, dipolomacy with Russia, and other foreign policy...
John C. Dvorak: “I don’t think Microsoft has ever sent out a patch that improved the performance of the machine. Ever.” You know he’s right.
Adobe Reader vulnerability can give access to you computer even if you don’t open the file. I’ve never liked the bulky Adobe Acrobat Reader. Too slow and bloated. A great alternative for Windows is Foxit Reader, which even has an alternative browser plug-in.
Epic Prank: this is worse than anything I ever did to my roomies in college. The good stuff starts at 1:25.
It’s Square Root Day!
Everyone needs a hobby. This guy is building his own full-size Stonehenge in his backyard with nothing but planks, rope, and sand. He’s proving that the structure could have been built with low-tech equipment. Kind of a strange past-time, but pretty impressive. Hat tip: Ethan.

Stumbled across this list of World Beard and Moustache Champions today. There are other countries represented, but clearly the Germans love them some crazy ‘staches.
Coolest name in the ‘Verse. NASA is holding a contest to name the new node of the International Space Station. Right now “Serenity” is winning with over 85% of the vote. Shiny!
I usually can’t stand Cracked.com, but this list of villian’s inboxes is hilarious.
Old-school high-tech is cool. Recent discoveries of Elizabethan English warships have revealed that those ships used an advanced system of smaller cannons with standarized amunition that fired shot nearly at the speed of sound. That kind of firepower could punch through another ship and come out the other side. Take that, pirates.
Sometimes legal stuff isn’t boring. Like a recent class action lawsuit against a women’s clothing manufacturer. The lawyer who won the settlement was going to get a cool $125,000 while the class members were just going to get lousy $10 gift cards to the same retailer. But then the judge decided that if gift cards were good enough for the class members, they were good enough for the...
I just discovered that the PBS show Nature is available online with full episodes. How did I go this long without knowing that? It’s really a great program. This one about “Shark Mountain” was superb, and I also liked this one about the Drakensberg mountains in South Africa. This is definitely going on my sites list in Miro.
Lawyers FTW! In L.A. the government has started suing drug gang members for damages. It’s about time the litigators gave back to society.

An excellent article about snarky humor. Definitely worth a listen. New Yorker writer David Denby has written a book entitled Snark, and I want to read it. One passage from the book talks about the Internet: “A snarky insult embedded in a story or post quickly gets traffic. It gets links to other blogs, and soon it has spread like a sneezy cold through the vast kindergarten of the...
Check out the winners of the 2008 World Press Photo of the Year contest. They are all worth looking at, and some of them are incredibly beautiful and compelling.
Today is 1234567890 Day! Celebrate at 3:31:30 Central Time. And bring your pocket protector.

Every cloud has a silver lining: With oil prices falling and the global economic crisis deepening, autocrats like Hugo Chávez and Vladamir Putin are getting less popular. Maybe human rights and free speech aren’t completely dead.
